Painting existential landscapes
I am a Dutch painter, living and working in Naarden, the Netherlands. I have been painting on and off for more than 30 years. I have no formal art training, I do as I please. I work in oils mainly, but also often use natural elements, like grass, twigs, thatch, seeds, sand or seaweed.
Before I became a full time artist I persued a succesful career in business. This has brought me around the world. I bring this experience along in my practice. It has shaped my vision on the world.
I paint existential landscapes, sometimes somewhat apocalyptic. I am intrigued by the vastness of the universe, both in space and in time. And I am acutely aware that we are only temporary spectators here and that we occupy just a tiny speck. My works are a reflection on nature’s enduring power and humanity’s fleeting and damaging presence within it. This presence might well be cut short or at least made very inconvenient in the not so distant future, because of how we live and what we do. As such my work is also a protest. It shows the world without our presence. As it once was and as it will be. By painting I feel I can express my concern and connect with the vastness of nature. And make the viewer reflect on our impermance.
